I have really enjoyed learning about new things over the last few years, especially when it comes to flowers. Every Spring I always find myself gravitating to the Tulips when I am grocery shopping - I just love having fresh blooms on the counter. I decided to try and grow some this year. I purchased bulbs in the Fall and put them in the refrigerator. I never knew how important it was to "chill" your bulbs before you plant them. It helps them grow better and it also allows you to have a longer stem - at least from what I've read. Most people buy "prechilled" bulbs. If you ever find yourself grabbing bulbs at the store, make sure you get them refrigerated for 8-16 weeks before planting.
I purchased about 70 bulbs and planted them with our daughter the beginning of January. We spaced them out according to the packets but I've since learned they can actually be planted much closer together.
Every single day we go out and watch the progress which is so fun for both of us. They took several weeks to bloom once they poked through the soil. It's been a lovely surprise to go out to the garden each day and see which ones have bloomed. We bought several colors and varieties. We pull out the entire thing then cut off the bulb and put them into a vase on the counter. My daughter LOVES pulling them out. I will absolutely be growing these every year with her - it's been special and such a treat to have them on the counter. You cannot get these sort of mixes at the grocery store.
