I shared several weeks ago that I was starting Dahlias from seeds. I am happy to report that it worked and my bed of Dahlias is growing beautifully. I started with the Bees Choice Mix from Floret Flower - which I highly recommend. Once the plants were 6+ inches tall, the chance of frost had passed and they were hardened off, I moved them out into the garden.
I have a raised bed that's 12 foot x 4 ft and I spaced them all about 12 inches apart. I squeezed in about 32 Dahlia plants and it's worked out well because they're helping support each other. We did add some netting (a little later than we wanted because we have a newborn) so I think that will also help support them with our high winds we get out here.
It's like a game- I love going out to the garden to see what opens next. Since we started the Dahlias from seeds, we don't know what they're going to look like. You only know what to expect when you plant Dahlias from tubers. The neat part is that we can save the tubers and plant them again next year and know exactly what will come up. Plus we can save more seeds to start the process again.
Look at the beauties that have opened up so far
This is what the plants looked like as I was hardening them off
Here's a snapshot of them all planted and ready to grow
